An Atwater PD officer was dragged more than 90 feet by a vehicle earlier today, police say.
Atwater PD officers were dispatched to the area of Third St. and Fir Ave for the report of an unresponsive male subject in a vehicle at 1:00 p.m.
Officers arrived to find a black male in the vehicle that appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. As officers tried to check on the condition of the driver, the driver started the car and un-expectantly tried to flee. An officer who was on the passenger side of the vehicle was caught in the open door of the vehicle and dragged over 90 feet before freeing himself from the moving vehicle. The vehicle was last seen traveling northbound on Winton way near Grove St., police say.
Atwater PD is looking for the vehicle involved in this incident. The vehicle is described as a late model silver Toyota Camry with a bicycle rack attached to the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle has the following license plate attached: California 7FPH719. The driver of the vehicle is described as a light skinned African American male, large build, with long dark dreadlocks and heavy acne scars.
The officer that was dragged by the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was checked out at Mercy hospital and released.
