A homeless encampment was removed between Highway 99 and Atwater Blvd today.

“We have to clear encampments that pose hazards along our highways,” said Rick Estrada, a public information officer for Caltrans District 10.

Estrada told Merced Daily Caltrans workers lifted a pallet bed and more than a dozen mice scattered everywhere. He also said Caltrans workers discovered 35-40 tires at the encampment.

All transients were given a 72 hour notice.

At least 10 transients were in the area when Caltrans arrived this morning.

It’s unknown if anyone accepted services.

Some transient were last seen heading south of Atwater.
