At approximately 6:08 p.m., a report of a vehicle fire on the side of the road on Highway 99 near the Atwater/Merced Express Way was reported.
An off-duty firefighter was first to arrive on scene, and noted the vehicle was on fire and it was abandon.
When CalFire arrived on scene, they noted the vehicle was fully engulfed with no one near the vehicle. The fire was eventually contained around 6:19 p.m.
Due to the #2 lane being blocked by the fire truck, heavy traffic was reported to be backed up all the way to Franklin.
After the vehicle fire was contained, an officer noted the vehicle was Gray Chevrolet out of Atwater.
It’s unknown at this time how the fire started.
