A man is in custody after assaulting a store clerk with a piece of wood, police say.

Merced Police responded to Buy n Bye Market located at 1108 ā€˜Gā€™ Street in Merced for a panic alarm, July 14th, 2020 at 8:54 p.m.

When Officers arrived on scene, they located the store clerk laying on the ground behind the counter. The victim suffered a large laceration and swelling to the top of his head. The suspect, later identified as Marcus Slaton (35) entered the store and hit the clerk in the head with a 2″ x 2″ piece of wood and fled the scene. The victim was transported by Riggs Ambulance to the hospital where he is receiving medical treatment.

Slaton was located by Merced Police in the 200 block of East 9th Street. A witness positively identified Slaton as the suspect who struck the store clerk with the piece of wood.

Slaton was transported to the Merced Police Department where he was interviewed by detectives.

He was later booked into the Merced County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
