A woman was found dead near the intersection of Secretariat Dr. and Belmont in Atwater.
Officers responded to the area for a shooting incident Tuesday at 10:15 p.m. after the reporting party said his girlfriend was the victim of a shooting.
Officers located a unresponsive adult female near a silver Honda. The woman was declared dead at scene by emergency medical personnel.
The investigation led officer to a residence a half a block north of where the victim was found, police say.
Evidence collected determined the shooting incident was a homicide, making the shooting incident the first homicide of the year in Atwater.
Motive of the shooting and why the victim was in the area is under investigation at this time. The male subject found with the victim is being questioned by authorities.
Officers also canvassed the area looking for surveillance camera footage to piece together the events surrounding the shooting.
