The Merced City Council will discuss changing the hours of fireworks sales and quiet zones at this Monday’s City Council meeting.

On the agenda:

•At the request of the public, staff is proposing that the hours of fireworks sales be limited to 10 p.m. The intent is to prevent people from setting off fireworks late into the night after purchasing them. Fireworks sales would be changed to begin most mornings at 8 a.m.

•The Council asked staff to conduct a quiet zone feasibility study. The consultant hired has estimated it would cost approximately $800,000 to modify the seven crossings that go through the City. Staff is seeking direction from the Council.

•Council will consider a request for a street closure for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Mon., Jan. 20. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at W. 8th Street and proceed down MLK Jr. Way to the Merced Theatre.

The Council will meet at 5 p.m. in closed session to confer with labor negotiators, to evaluate the City Manager and for existing litigation.

The regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the Merced Civic Center (City Hall), 678 W. 18th St.
