Man killed after crash in Merced.
Authorities responded to a fatal collision on northbound SR-99 near V St., Wednesday night at 10:40 p.m.
The investigation determined a 56-year-old male, was driving a 2019 International, 3 axle truck tractor and towing a 2003 Drata reefer trailer northbound on SR-99 in the #1 lane south of V Street at 10 miles per hour, CHP say.
Meanwhile, a 42 year old male out of Modesto, CA was driving a 2021 Mazda CX-5 northbound on SR-99 in the #1 lane approaching the rear of the big rig at an unknown higher rate of speed, CHP say.
According to CHP, there was road construction north of the location merging the #1 lane into the #2 lane, which started 3 miles north of the collision scene, CHP say. The adult male failed to see the slow traffic ahead and collided into the rear of the trailer. The force of the collision resulted in fatal injuries.
No drugs and/or alcohol appear to be a factor for the survivor of the collision, which had no injuries, CHP say.
The collision is still under investigation.
