For over two years the left over rubble caused from a fire across the street from Sybil N. Crookham Elementary School in Winton has been a major eyesore.

Merced County finally gave the property owner a deadline with two options: clean it up and pay for it, or Merced County will have someone clean it up for the property owner and the county will make the owner pay for it at a possibly higher fee.

Due to pressure coming down from Merced County, the property was finally cleaned up earlier this month.

For those who are not aware of what happened, on May 20, 2016 around 7 a.m., a fire erupted at the SchoolHouse Apartments in Winton on Walnut Avenue.  The blaze ripped through 18 units which left over 60 people homeless.

The estimated cause of damage from the fire was little over a million dollars.
