Two people sustain major injuries after vehicle crashes into utility power pole in Winton

On March 31, 2019, at 7:14 pm, Merced Communications received a call of a solo vehicle rollover collision in Winton.

Units quickly arrived on scene and found two people suffering from major injuries.

Upon further investigation it’s determined that the driver Jose Cardenas Vargas (18, Winton CA) was driving his 2017 Infiniti on Northbound Winton Way, south of Palm Ave. in an excess of 100 mph, per witness statements and physical evidence. For unknown reason, he lost control of the vehicle and traveled off onto the west shoulder of Winton Way colliding with a utility power pole. The Infiniti continued to roll out of control multiple times in a northwesterly direction, colliding with two fences and six trees. The passenger, Martha Garcia Flores (19, Atwater) was transported to Memorial Medical center by air ambulance for major injuries. Cardenas Vargas was transported to Doctor’s Medical Center by ambulance for major injuries.

Drugs nor alcohol were a factor in this collision
