Atwater City Fire responded to the 5200 Block of E. Broadway Avenue for a vegetation fire at 3:00 p.m.
According to Cal Fire Atwater Battalion Chief Bobby Ayuso, when fire crews arrived the vegetation fire had extended to debris piles and an RV at a local business.
The spread of the fire prompted the request of additional resources from Merced County Fire.
Eventually, the fire was contained, but an Atwater Police Officer had to be taken to a local hospital due to smoke inhalation from the fire.
No other injuries were reported.
