On Tuesday February 4, 2020 the Merced Police Department Detectives were able to identify a suspect in the shooting of five juveniles that originally occurred on January 30, 2020. Detective Pinnegar was able to secure a search warrant for a residence in the 100 block of W. Main Street and an arrest warrant for five counts of attempted homicide on the suspect, Daniel Mays.
The Merced Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit executed the search warrant at around 2:30 P.M. today. SWAT Officers were able to take Mays into custody without incident. Mays was turned over to detectives to be interviewed.
A search was conducted of Mays’s residence where some items of evidence were collected. The firearmis still outstanding and was not located at this time. Mays was later booked into Merced County Jail for the five counts of attempted homicide warrant.
Originally officers located four juvenile victims at the scene of the shooting. A fifth juvenile has since come forward and sustained a non-life threatening injury during the shooting.
Detectives are still working on establishing a motive for the shooting. Detectives have not ruled out the possibility this may be gang related.
On January 30, 2020, the Merced Police Department received calls regarding a shooting which had occurred in the 100 block of W. Main. Officers arrived in the area and they located four juveniles who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Officers were able to secure the scene and the victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Three of the victims were in stable condition, while the fourth was critical. The Merced Police Department Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene to assist in the collection evidence. Merced Police detectives are currently working the case and following up on leads. The suspect isdescribed as an adult male in his late 20’s or 30’s. At this point in the investigation, a motive has not been determined.
