CHP Merced responded to Santa Fe and Shaffer Road for a multi-vehicle traffic collision at 5:25 a.m.

When CHP arrived on scene, a vehicle was overturned in the field near Santa Fe. Three other vehicles were also believed to be involved.

Upon further investigation it was learned that a 2013 Honda, driven by 34-year-old Aaron Herrera from Winton, crashed into the rear of a 2005 Nissan, driven by a 54-year-old female from Planada. The Nissan overturned due to the impact.

A second traffic collision would occur moments later, according to CHP.

A 2016 Hyundai Elantra stopped due to the traffic collision on Santa Fe, seconds later, a 2007 GMC Sierra crashed into the rear of the Hyundai Elantra. Neither of those driver were under the influence, according to CHP.

Only minor injuries were reported in both collisions.

The investigation determined Aaron Herrera, who allegedly caused the traffic collision, told officers he was distracted by his phone while driving. However, he was arrested for suspicion of being under the influence, according to Public Information Officer Eric Zuniga.
